Rajjaprabha Dam
Rajjaprabha Dam (also widely known as the Cheow Lan Lake) is a major hydroelectric dam located within the stunning Khao Sok National Park in the Surat Thani province of Southern Thailand.
Overview and History
-
The Name: The name "Rajjaprabha" was bestowed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and translates to "Light of the Kingdom."

-
Purpose: Constructed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and inaugurated in 1987, the dam serves multiple purposes: hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and as a significant center for regional tourism and fisheries.
-
The Reservoir: The construction created Cheow Lan Lake, a massive, breathtaking man-made reservoir covering approximately 165 square kilometers. The lake is famous for its emerald-green waters, ancient rainforest surroundings, and iconic limestone karst formations that rise dramatically from the water—often drawing comparisons to the landscape of Guilin, China.
Experiences and Activities
The area is a premier destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers:
-
Longtail Boat Tours: The primary way to explore the lake. These tours take visitors through hidden coves, past limestone cliffs, and to scenic viewpoints.
-
Floating Bungalows: A unique accommodation experience. Staying overnight in a floating raft house allows you to fully immerse yourself in the quiet wilderness, wake up to sunrise views over the mist-covered lake, and easily access the water for swimming or kayaking.
-
Wildlife & Nature: The reservoir is surrounded by protected wildlife sanctuaries, home to diverse species including elephants, wildcats, various primates, and an array of tropical birds and plants.
-
Adventure: Popular activities include kayaking, jungle trekking, and exploring nearby caves.
Visitor Information
-
Getting There: The access point is in the Ban Ta Khun district of Surat Thani province. The dam area is well-signposted along Route 401.

-
Entry Fees: Visitors must pay a National Park entrance fee to access the lake and participate in boat tours.
-
Best Time to Visit: While it is a year-round destination, early mornings are highly recommended to witness the famous lake mist and enjoy the tranquility before day-tour crowds arrive. The dry season (November–April) generally offers the clearest skies and calmest waters.
-
Travel Tips: Pack Accordingly: Bring essentials like a waterproof bag for electronics, sunscreen, insect repellent, and footwear suitable for both boat trips and potential hiking.
-
Book Ahead: Especially during weekends and holidays, it is wise to arrange your boat tours and accommodation in advance as they can fill up quickly.
